About Storm King

When the hostess of a square dance camp mentioned that she would learn to clog if she could go somewhere for a week to learn, Edith & Dean Sandy and Rae & Russell Kermond made it happen. They found a Queensland Education Camp outside Stanthorpe – Storm King Dam – and it all began.

The 1st Storm King Dam Clog Camp was held in March 1989. In attendance were 26 raw recruits & about the same in experienced dancers, 6 instructors from NSW & QLD, as well as Square Dance caller, David Pearce to help with dancing in the evening.

The 2nd camp in 1990 saw a huge increase in attendance with the advent of new clogging clubs around Australia. Also, there were special guests, Ralph and Phyllis Turner from Michigan, USA along with cloggers and instructors from WA, VIC, NSW, ACT and of course QLD. The camp grew each year until it became so large it out grew Storm King Dam. The last clog camp at the Storm King Dam was held in 1997.

The camps were always organised by the Sandys & Kermonds. Dean passed in 1996, but the organisation was carried on by Edith, Rae & Russell, along with help from the Gympie & visiting cloggers.

In 1998 the clog camp was moved to Warwick – Kingswood Camp Centre, but this camp was not really suitable and was only used for the one year. There was no camp in 1999, due to everyone being busy organising the National ACA Convention in QLD that year.

2000 saw a few more changes with a move to Camp Warrawee in Joyner on the north side of Brisbane. Also, this year Rae & Russell decided to retire. In 2002, Edith asked Jenny & Dennis Neal to join the team, which they did. Once at Camp Warrawee the ‘dam’ on the name was dropped and it became ‘Storm King Clog Camp’. We stayed at Camp Warrawee until 2014 when we decided the halls were becoming a bit small and went looking again.

2015 saw Storm King arrive at it’s new home at Luther Heights Youth Camp, Coolum Beach on Queensland’s beautiful Sunshine Coast.

2020 was the last camp Edith organised, handing the reins over to Jenny & Dennis to continue the great camp that it has become. 2021 saw the camp cancelled for the first time, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Storm King has always been the place for new instructors & cuers to try their wings outside of the safety of their own clubs. Many new instructors have gone on to start their own successful clubs.

Many, many people make Storm King the success it has become. Without these wonderful people we couldn’t do it. Storm King has been successful for more than 30 years and we hope to be able to continue for many years to come.
